Psychotherapy ST/SpR Training Scheme

Bristol

TPD:  Dr Andrew Clark

This three year scheme conforms with the Royal College of Psychiatrists' requirements for higher specialist training in Psychotherapy and will lead to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Psychotherapy.  This will enable the postholder to apply for appointment as a Specialist Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy within the National Health Service.  The scheme is based in the Psychotherapy Services in Bristol with possibilities for attachments in Swindon, Cheltenham and Exeter.

The Programme Director for the scheme is Dr Andrew Clark.  The training will be overseen by a Psychotherapy Specialist Training Committee consisting of Dr Andrew Clark (Programme Director), Dr Ray Brown (Trainer), Dr Peter Amies (CBT Trainer), Dr Alcuin Wilkie (Family Therapy Trainer) and Professor Glyn Lewis (Research Supervisor).

The major focus of clinical training on the scheme will be in psychodynamic/group analytic psychotherapies.  Year 1 will provide a solid grounding in psychodynamic/group analytic assessment and treatment.  Year 2, whilst continuing the psychodynamic component, will include attachments in family therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy.  Year 3 will allow for the development of more specialist areas of interest according to the Trainee's needs - for example, work with trauma victims and personality disorder. There will also be opportunities to spend time in other Psychotherapy services in the region such as Exeter (Trainer Dr Sue Mizen) and Cheltenham (Trainer to be appointed).

The academic programme will continue throughout the three years focussing on major theoretical models in psychotherapy and clinical approaches to specific disorders.

Throughout the three year training the Trainee will have an ongoing placement with Dr Andrew Clark in the Psychotherapy Service at Blackberry Hill Hospital and with Dr Ray Brown in the Psychotherapy Service at the Susan Britton Wills Unit, Bristol General Hospital. A sample timetable for the first year is given below.
