Until the middle of the nineteenth century, Swindon was a small market town in Wiltshire; all this changed in 1840, when the the Great Western Railway established its works between the Old Town and Swindon Hill. The town's Victorian parks and gardens provide green spaces whilst its pedestrianised centre boasts a variety of shops, bars, clubs and pubs to suit all tastes. Attractions like the nearby Lydiard House and Gardens prove that Swindon is a modern town with plenty of heritage on offer.
